Australia’s grapegrowing regions are mostly in the south of the country, in the states of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania. Geographical Indications (GIs) are the wine appellations within these states. Our latest Tasting Highlights explores an assortment of wines made from a range of grapes across several GIs. Helpfully, these wines are priced $37 or less; even better, they've achieved scores up to 92 points on our 100-point scale.
In South Australia, the Adelaide Hills GI is marked by a cool and sunny maritime climate. Here, D’Arenberg has made its Sauvignon Blanc The Broken Fishplate 2023, which shows juicy peach and citrus flavors. Farther north in Clare Valley, Seppeltsfield offers its impressive 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, one of this week's top scorers, which shows elegance and juicy blue fruit notes. Moving onto Barossa Valley, there is the sophisticated and graphite-accented 3 Rings Shiraz from the Hickinbothams, a well-known winemaking family.
This lineup also includes Yering Station's Shiraz-Viognier Yarra Valley 2021, a sleek and polished wine with dark berry and plum notes. Read on to get our score and full tasting note for this wonderful Australian wine and eight others.
