As the weather cools and the days get a bit shorter, hearty red wines can be go-tos for those fall evenings nestled in. Look no further than Australia for great, value-driven reds to accompany you at the dinner table or on the couch. Our latest Tasting Highlights features excellent Australian wines made using grapes like Shiraz (aka Syrah) and Cabernet Sauvignon across various regions Down Under. That includes a GSM blend of Rhône grapes, one of Australia's signature styles. Altogether, these wines have scored up to 93 points on our 100-point scale, and they're priced $40 or less, with two at just $16.
Vintner John Duval has been working with Shiraz for much of his life: His family grew Shiraz grapes in South Australia and supplied them to well-known winery Penfolds. In 2003, Duval founded his own namesake winery, where he and his eldest son, Tim, continue to champion old-vine Barossa Shiraz. Duval's elegant Entity bottling, below, offers a juicy mouthful of raspberry, cherry and pomegranate flavors.
This lineup also includes Penfolds' Shiraz South Australia Bin 28 2022, which shows an impressive mix of cherry, vanilla and almond notes. Read on to get our score and full tasting note for this wonderful Australian wine and nine others.
