Toast to Mom with a Refreshing Sparkling Wine Cocktail for Mother’s Day

From Elva Ramirez’ “Sparkling: Champagne and Sparkling Cocktails for Any Occasion,” these two recipes are great for a big family party or one-on-one time with mom

Mother’s Day is deceivingly simple: No matter what you do, nothing compares with what she’s already given you, but she’ll still adore it. There is always a way to elevate the day and make it more special: breaking out the nice china (and offering to wash it), making dinner yourself, popping open a bottle of bubbles or mixing up an elegant cocktail.

How about combining all of those? There’s no better way to spritz up a celebration than a sparkling wine cocktail, believes author Elva Ramirez. During the gloomy days of COVID-19 lockdowns, Ramirez sensed that, once the pandemic subsided, people were going to seize the moment, get together and celebrate as much as they could.

“We’re in a wonderful moment of celebration right now,” says Ramirez. “Over the last few years, going back further than the pandemic, people have been rethinking celebration in terms of making it more accessible. Celebrations will still be weddings and graduations, but celebration can just be a moment like a nice Sunday night with your friends. Making those moments special is an accessible luxury.”

Ramirez’s just-released cocktail book, Sparkling: Champagne and Sparkling Cocktails for Any Occasion, features 75 recipes using sparkling wine. Showing how versatile Champagne, Cava, Lambrusco and other bubblies can be, these drinks meld sparklers with fruitier and zingingly sour flavors as well as the sophisticated and savory. Everyone knows the classics, like the Aperol Spritz or the French 75, but Ramirez tapped into her connections with bartenders from leading cocktail programs for creative, innovative drinks using different spirits, from gin to tequila.

Mother’s Day can be celebrated any number of ways—from easygoing brunches to evening soirées to relaxed one-on-one time with mom—so Ramirez selected two cocktails that could work for any occasion. For a larger family group, make the Studio 75: a punch inspired by the French 75 but laced with spiced pear liqueur and anise pods to create a refreshing but mellow and mature tipple. For an easy sipper, try the Instant Crush, Ramirez’s take on Ranch Water (a beloved Texas thirst-quencher that’s simply tequila, sparkling water and lime). Her version uses yuzu liqueur and yuzu soda, with the Japanese citrus bringing more zip than lime alone and making a great accent to an array of sparkling wines.

When selecting a sparkler, Ramirez stresses that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get good quality. “You can do quite well with something that costs around $10 to $15; you can even get lovely French sparkling wine,” says Ramirez. “But before you start making your cocktails, buy one or two different bottles and taste them on their own.”

For the fizz in these drinks, Wine Spectator’s editors chose 12 special sparkling wines, all under $35, to add a bit more flair. From cava and crémant to Prosecco and Franciacorta to classic-method brut from California and Long Island, these bubblies will make mom smile even wider.

Ingredients

  • 18 ounces Fords gin (or other London Dry Gin)
  • 9 ounces St. George spiced pear liqueur
  • 9 ounces fresh lemon juice
  • 12 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 750ml bottle chilled Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label Champagne (or other brut sparkling wine)
  • 2 pears, thinly sliced, for garnish
  • 1/2 cup star anise pods, for garnish

Preparation

1. In a pitcher or large container filled with large ice cubes (see note), combine the gin, pear liqueur, lemon juice and bitters. Stir to combine, then add the entire bottle of Champagne. Add a handful of pear slices to the mixture, reserving the majority for garnish. Serve the punch in coupes or punch glasses, garnishing each with a pear slice and a star anise pod. Serves 15–20.

Note: If you only have small serving containers, mix the entire batch in a large, heavy soup pot, then transfer to small decorative serving containers, such as glass bottles or pitchers.
